Car Charger Installation – for All Makes/Models of Electric Cars in San Diego
Once, Tesla seemed to have the electric-car market cornered. Now every car company from Chevrolet to Mercedes-Benz has some sort of fully electric vehicle on the market. EVs once were considered “luxury,” but now you can find one for as little as $25K. You can also get hybrid-electric vehicles that use gas, but also use a charger, like the Toyota Prius Prime. (If you haven’t bought your EV and plug-in hybrid options yet, you can compare all your options here.)
San Diego is blessed with 125 public charging stations (find them on PlugShare). But as the proud owner of an electric car, you may find having your own home charging station the easiest and most cost-effective way to keep your car on the road.

Home car chargers are cost-effective
Installing a dedicated charging station is usually more cost-effective than homeowners imagine. The charger itself is only around $600 on average. You can get a big list of charging equipment options here, though your dealer will usually sell you the charger that best fits your car’s make and model. However, since you may need additional electrical work (see below) you should consider those costs as well.
Fortunately, tax credits often offset the cost of installing your charger. These change year by year, so it’s important to research this year’s laws before counting on them. As of this writing, for example, San Diego residents who own multi-family housing can take advantage of some excellent credits should they wish to install these chargers somewhere on their property for residents to use.
Installing your EVSE
Your “charger,” (or, more properly, your Electric Vehicle Service Equipment) will typically be placed in your garage. You can install a 30 AMP charger, but it’s a good idea to make sure the charger can take at least 50 AMPs. Better EVs are coming, and you don’t want to have to upgrade your charging station every time you upgrade your car. A more powerful charging station will also help you get your vehicle charged and ready to go that much faster.
EV marketing materials make it seem as though installing EVSE is as simple as mounting the box on the wall. In reality, installing your charging station will take a great deal of work and know-how. This is not a DIY project…it is a project for a licensed, reputable electrician, preferably one certified to installed EVSEs. We’ve been certified by Tesla for years now, are BMW certified, and are busy seeking certifications from all the other vehicle manufacturers as well.
Installing your charger might require an upgrade of your electrical box. It might also require the installation of a 240 Volt line that will run from your box to your garage. It also requires the installation of a special outlet, namely, the NEMA 14-50 outlet. During your hassle-free installation we will assess your home’s capabilities and advise you on what needs to happen in order to get your charger installed safely.
