Category 6 Cabling Installation
Your ISP and Internet plans may be the fastest you can buy, but if your data wiring isn’t up to snuff you’ll experience all the speed of LA traffic. Category-6 cabling gives you a reliable ethernet structure capable of supporting speeds of up to 10 GBPS.
What makes cat-6 cables different? First, they’re filled with twisted copper wiring. Second, they have incredible shielding. Both of those features work together to create a cable capable of minimizing signal interference, which makes your network efficient and lightning-fast.
Cat-6 is durable and long lasting. It should be error-free for at least a decade, if not for longer.
What about Cat-5 and Cat-7?
Cat-5 ethernet cable still works, but it doesn’t support the same speeds. It only supports 1000 Mbps speeds.
For a couple of years both Cat-5 and Cat-6 were available, and electricians tended to choose the former because it was less expensive than Cat-6. Few customers, whether residential or commercial, had access to Internet speeds requiring Cat-6.
Cat-7 cable is now in the same position. It supports exactly as much speed as Cat-6: 10 Gbps. The difference is in frequency support. Cat-6 can handle up to 500 MHz; Cat-7 can handle up to 600 MHz. This difference isn’t enough, in most cases, to make the greater expense worth it.
Cat-6 cables are backwards-compatible with Cat-5 cables, when necessary. Cat-7 cables are also backwards-compatible. And any good electrician wires these systems with future upgrades and expansions in mind.
All this means you can feel confident making Category 6 cabling the backbone of your data infrastructure.
