Why did I lose power to my home?
Let’s assume you’ve already checked the circuit breakers and your electric bill is all up to date. What else could be going wrong?
One possibility: your service drop is down.
Your service drop is a pole on top of your roof. If you look at the top of the pole you’ll see thick cables running from that pole to the service lines running from pole to pole in your neighborhood.
Those drops are your responsibility, not the power company’s, but they can go down for all the same reasons: storms, ice build up, tree limbs, and more. Sometimes old vines or trees around the electrical companies pole will pull the drop slowly up from the house until it ultimately falls down.
They’re dangerous and should be treated as an emergency. Don’t go near them! Remember there’s enough power flowing through the drop to light up your whole house (and body). Homeowners are prohibited from attempting this work by law: you need a licensed electrician on the job. Even we will need to get the utility company to cut off power to the house first.
Another possibility: something happened to your underground wire
If you look outside and see that you don’t appear to have a service drop there’s a good chance your service lines are buried. That’s good news because tree limbs and weather events are no longer an issue, but being buried doesn’t make them invulnerable.
Landscapers, homeowners, and construction crews sometimes strike the lines while digging.
Again, this is something that, by law, a homeowner can’t simply run out to try to fix.
Yet another possibility: you’ve got power to part of your house
This weird situation is the result of a circuit that’s gone down. The appliances and fixtures in your house runs on more than one circuit, of course, so it’s common to see one go down while the others continue to function just fine. In this case, you’ll need us to perform a circuit repair.
