Is your electrical problem an emergency?
Should you wait? Or should you call right away? Here’s how to tell:
Your house is the only one on your street without power = emergency
When many homes lose power, the problem is a blown transformer or downed power lines. That’s for the utility company to work on, and there’s not much we can do about it.
But when you’re the only one without power, that’s a sign something’s gone wrong on your end. If you flip the breakers and confirmed that you paid your electric bill this month, and you’re still without power, give us a call. You’ve got a problem only an experienced electrician can solve.
You smell something burning, or you see brown marks on your outlets = emergency
Never a good sign. Unplug everything attached to that outlet. Flip the breaker to turn off power to the outlet and call us right away.
Older outlets are especially prone to becoming fire hazards. Loose screws, loose wiring, rust, and worn metal all can cause heat buildup. At the very least, the outlet needs to be replaced. Also, you’ll want us to determine whether there are other problems in your system that could cause similar hazards.
Sometimes you’ll see the outlet spark up. The spark will come and go quickly, but don’t ignore it! One small spark now can start one deadly fire later.
Your service panel is hot = emergency
That might be a tough one to catch, because most people don’t interact with their service panels very much on a day-to-day basis. But if you do happen to notice heat emanating from your service panel it’s important to call us right away. Again, that’s is a fire waiting to happen.
Believe it or not, this one usually isn’t a tough fix. It’s a sign of a loose wire or a bad breaker. But sometimes it’s a sign of a far more serious problem. An expert needs to make that evaluation.
Your electrical box is singing to you = emergency
Buzzing sounds from the breaker box are another sign of a loose wire or a bad breaker that can cause a fire. To some people, that may sound more like a humming noise.
Regardless of how you perceive the sound, it is usually a sign of a breaker that’s refusing to trip. Breakers are supposed to trip when the circuit overheats. If the breaker is failing to do its job, then your wiring is handling heat and power loads it was never meant to handle. Shut off all power and call us right away.
The breakers keep tripping = emergency
This means one of three things: your electrical system is getting overloaded, you’ve got a short circuit, or you’ve got a ground fault. Several elements of your electrical system may have gone wrong to produce those problems.
The first is relatively harmless, but it’s a hint your system needs an update. That is especially true in older houses, which aren’t meant to run nearly as many electronics as we now rely on every day. The second two are extremely dangerous, and need attention right away.
